i kind of have a substance abuse problem
i have way too many band t shirts
it is an addiction that started at bdo this year... incouraged by kathy
i have nothing on her fine collection (i think she has over twenty)
but mine is still pretty ridiculous and it is contining to grow...
i'm getting a dandy warhols one tomorrow and there are atleast 5 bands i want from falls...
everyone i know has this same problem so we have instituted band t wednesday at uni

note: the reason i have a band aid on my chin is because i am completely unco and walk into things and no i was not drunk... i have been asked that by everyone; i'm just naturally unco

i got this one at bdo... i still love it. it was the first band t i bought

i got this one about 5 mins after the arcade fire set ended at bdo. so filled with mememories. best bdo ever.

this t is one of my favourites because i got it the day that k and i met the wombats and got to go to their metro gig even though i was under 18 and it was sold out. best day.

bit of a tent... but it was free and it is the only one that is signed... mind you it is in pen so you can barely see it.

splendour was bad for my habbit i got 5 t shirts including cold war kids...

so many t-shirts in one w/e.

josh made ts for his band...

i love this tshirt. it was a great concert and i love the sound of music-escque picture.

really want to go as the klaxons are playing! and they won't play side shows because daft punk didn't last year!

the dirty lying presets

so the story goes that the album title apocalypso was an orignial term coined by the presets.

it's not.

suposedly they came up with it by combinding the words calypso and apocalypse. and this melding of the two very different things was meant to be an allogory for their music combinding issues (refugees) with fun (dance music). give me a bucket.

it is a word that has been around for ages and one of it's uses is a title for a mental as anything song. this song was released in 1984!!!! over 20 years before the presets ever used it.

believe it or not this video won awards....

this review = my ticket + my id into british india (march 08)

written after the 2nd time i saw them (1st was bdo)
not sure what i would write now, considering i have seen them a groupietastic 6 times this year, but i'm fairly certain only two words would remain the same "British" and "India"

note: the lameness may overwhelm you. please have a vomit receptacle handy.

Despite their name British India is not just another British indie band, they aren’t even from the UK. British India formed in Melbourne; the bands’ members went to high school together and so far they have surpassed all the normal expectations of garage band stardom. Especially when you consider that their debut album was nominated for Triple J’s J Award, they won AIR (Australian Independent Record Labels Association) award for 'Best New Independent Artist' and they have also strutted their stuff on stage at the various Big Day Out’s around the country this year. As if all of this hadn’t established their street cred with the indie kids; the band is currently recording a new alum while simultaneously touring the country. The little over achievers of indie music did not disappoint when they took to the stage at Unibar.

The rain, that was relentless, did nothing to dampen the spirits of the band or the enthusiasm of the crowd. Watt Riot and The Bungalows got quite a few people dancing, but it was British India that people had braved the monsoon for. It is something to do with the offbeat topics of songs blended with the “can’t get this tune out of my head” music that kept the crowd yelling for more. The band obliged, rolling out all of the favorite songs off the album ‘Guillotine’ as well as some new stuff. The song that got everyone on their feet doing the awkward indie bop was the beloved ‘Run the Red Light’ which is interesting not about traffic infringements but instead is about knocking up an underage girl. Or as Declan Melia, the singer, so aptly and disturbingly euphemised “it’s about a ballooning accident I once had”.

You would have to work very hard not to be won over by the awkward dorkiness that seems to be at the heart of this band. They haven’t been entirely wrapped up in their success, considering they still sell their own merch and seemed to take pleasure in meeting the fans after the show. On stage have the aura of ‘hardcore’ musicians but after closer inspection they are the kind of guys you could take home to meet your mother.

During the set it seemed as if all of the members of the band were genuinely enjoying themselves this mood rubbed off on the crowed who were left wanting more. British India is still touring and their second, as yet untitled, album will be released later this year.

being underage while all of your friends are 18 is possiblely the worst thing ever to be endured; well maybe not the worst thing ever i do supose that famine or plauge may perhaps be worse and more apt a breaking the human spirit but not by much. in any case i do not wish it upon anyone... i actually like. one is forced to do unspeakable things to be able to get into gigs that others take for granted and that is how i ended up a memember of unicrew.

what this entails; basically you are forced to perform slave labour in order to get into bands at uni for free but the brillant thing for me was that as long as you are wearing the shirt no one checks you for id. sounds easy? far from it. a word to the wise always read the fine print. take the shirt for example. it is not just any shirt, it is a shirt in a hue of eye-raping orange so dazzling that it causes optical spasming if you are even to give it a mere passing glance. and wearing this shirt gives you the same social standing for the night as a leper.

the fun does not stop there...then there are the menial tasks; wrists banding, photography and reviewing. all of which force way to much social interaction with the questionable patrons of uni bar.

so as the 42nd bogan twinset brush you aside with their spine tingling screech ("Naaaaawah thanks me nd Shaz don't want no photo.") and their vacantly twitching eyes (like the ice addicts they are; only this time the twitching is caused by your shirt), you begin to question. is some band really worth the destruction of my soul? thankfully just when you hit you lowest ebb, you are released and you can rip off your neon shackles of unicentre opression and the cliches can begin to flow.

you take your respective places in front of the stage and the stage lights burn into life. the musicans swager onto stage, take up their instruments and as the first chord shimmers out over the heads of the crowd, through the cloud of mingled sweat and smoke, you turn to your war weary comrad and your heart swoops and then abruptly loeses momentum and thwacks sickening against your diaphram like the provebial brick it has become due to the fact that you have just been hit with the cold, hard realisation that you don't even like this band...

on a scale of one to crazy...

this is a question that has come up for discussion recently
a few of us have noticed the inherent craziness that comes with music/musicians from nordic countries
(it is so much more amusing than pol 121)
and from this we have created so sort of scale of to map the craziness.

basically is goes from the hives (a bit bonkers) to bjork (um... yeah... there are no words just a whole lot of o crazy)
the scale is as follows...

1) the hives

-from abbaland aka sweden
-a bit out there
-dress in uniform
-but have never done anything incredibly outlandish

2)kashmir

-danish
-collaberated with bowie; whom isn't a stabalising force by any strech of the imagination

3) the sounds

-finish so they get even less sunlight
-leadsinger very out there; likes to flash underwear during concerts
-music more out there

4) bjork

-icelandic
-dresses in costume
-changes a song completey half way through
-does anything and gets away with it

these are the four points of reference... and it is still a work in progress.

so people that i vaguely know got to guest programe rage the other day which got me thinking

along with album art work the truely great music video (due to the digitalisation of music) is said to be dead... but really who are the naysayers thats proclaim everything to be either "over" or "dead"...

i bet you it is the the uber cool liberal arts students or the super cool indie scum

i have been a very bad blogger when there has been so much happening musically!!! um so big day out line up announced very very mehtastic in my opinion but having said that i amd still going because it is such a good day... very bummed about keith giving me a bumsteer about the raconters play they very muchly are not!!!

so there are some killer bands like the arctic monkey and ecsr but the bullet for my crapintine.... why?

big day out -- oh ate

At the start of the year I went to big day out Sydney with my concert buddy Kathryn... it wasn’t the best line up ever but we ended up having a ridiculously good time....
We bought a disposable camera to document our day. So this is our day in photos...

This picture was taken by Kathryn and is me being stupidly excited an enthusiastic on the train... it was a long train trip.

The first band we saw was Dappled Cities... formally known as Dappled Cities Fly as Kathryn so informatively told me... they played rather well... they are an Australian band but they still managed to draw a crowd.

There was this really annoying girl dancing near us who had a dappled cities t-shirt; Kathryn was bitter and thus proceeded to describe her as “a bit of a hussy”...

The next band we saw was British India... we hadn’t heard anything by them but we decided to see them because well there was nothing else on they proved to be a highlight of the day surprisingly...

Kathryn got a little photo happy....

We were particularly enamoured by the lead singer’s floral shirt...
And continued to be enamoured....

Multitasking; the singer is now the drumer too....?

There was nothing we wanted to see for a while so we just wandered round seeing random bands for a bit.... soft tigers (from memory)

We went to the main stadium and Kathryn took these to photos that only once the camera was developed we saw how she had taken an almost perfect panorama shot....
It looks pretty cool...

Faker was playing... we weren’t keen to hang round to hear their whiny Australian pop rock.

When we went back to the v stage to go and see belles will ring we saw two of the member’s of British India... we groupied it up and got a photo with them.
This is such a regrettable photo in hindsight....

Once in possession of our camera, the unnamed drunkard then proceeded to take a photo up his trousers (which did not turn out, which is the happiest thing ever)
Then he took this photo so we can treasure his memory for ever *heavy sarcasm*
The lady in the hat in the photo above was his girlfriend and partner in crime

Liam from Belles will ring strutting on stage...
Kathryn felt like a bit of a crazy groupie because she was wearing their t-shirt and was standing in the front row...

Spoon was definitely a highlight if the day...

Especially when the leader singer ripped into the security guard that was picking on the crowd...
It was very extremely amusing

The brass section was really good...

The absolute best act of the festival was Arcade Fire. They are an amazing band and they were spectacular live...

We were on the barrier and when the lead singer came down into the crow it was right where we were standing..

Everyone scrabbled over us and I thought that someone had grabbed my hair... turns out it was the lead singer... love

They played the bet set... it was just amazing...
The camera sort of failed us due to the dark and lack of a good flash.
A lot of people were disappointed that Bjork cancelled but i honestly can’t say that it negatively affected my day...

When RATM were starting we were the only two people running out of the stadium, while the everyone else was running in... they aren’t our thing.
Instead we saw LCD sound system and Paul Kelly (and Dan Kelly)... way better in my opinion.

It was a truly epically good day.

so this is my blog about music.....

it is going to be focused on my experiences with music this year so far. it is a way of recounting and critiquing all of the bands that i have seen this year.

to preface this whole blog i love going to see bands live, it is rad...

but i am not a terrible music snob. i like what i like but i also get that you all like what you like and i am willing to listen to anything once.

the name of this blog came from an analogy about what it is like to listen to music that you don't like... because it truely can be like having warm vomit stuffed forcably into your ears
